The Genesis Cover I didn’t Know I Needed

This was released yesterday, Easter Sunday. And if you are Ghost fan, that will make sense to you. It was like the second thing I saw this morning when I got into work, and really set the tone for the whole day. I mean, how could Ghost not do the song justice? They did…they did do the song justice. Even if you’re not a fan of the Genesis version, maybe the Ghost version will be something you’ll enjoy.

This Video Made Me Smile

As I read this article, I debated whether or not to click the on the video and watch it. I’m so glad I did, because watching Keith Moon play drums made me smile. It’s also pretty cool seeing all 4 of them playing in the studio like that, but man, I just can’t get over watching Keith on the drums. With his headphone duct taped on. That must have been fun to remove. Enjoy. WARNING! This video has a bad word in it…..

Joe Elliott Joins Tobias Forge

If you don’t know the name Tobias Forge, I hope that once you hear this, you dive into his music. He is the force behind the band Ghost. I was introduced to the band a few years ago, and while I enjoyed what I heard, I wasn’t what you would call a fan. Then last year the band released Impera, and the song Spillways as a single. That was it for me. That song has jumped to the top of my favorites list, and for a song released in 2022, that’s pretty impressive. This morning I saw an article that Ghost had released Spillways with Joe Elliot lending his voice to verses. I was skeptical. I mean, Joe has a great voice, but I was not sure how it would fit into the song. In fact, right before I pushed Play on the video, I said out loud, “I hope this isn’t a mistake.” It wasn’t. Joe slips in almost unnoticed, blends in like it was meant to be. Here is the link to the article….and the video is below. – Scott Cruize

Speaking Of Boston….

It’s always going to be one of my favorite albums, that first Boston album. I love all the songs on it but maybe two (depending on my mood), and will never pass up an opportunity to play it. So when I saw that Rick Beato had somehow come into possession of the demo recordings for it, I had to watch and listen. It’s fascinating to hear the difference. Not just in the production quality, but the music and lyrics. When you have 37 or so minutes, give it a watch…I did, and now I’m behind in all the things I have to do the rest of the day. But worth it!

My Favorite Boston Song…

Foreplay/Longtime is by far my favorite Boston song. From the first time I heard it to today, I crank it up as loud as whatever I am listening ton as loud as it can go and just, well, rock out. And generally after I listen to it, I have to give my ears a rest. So when, quite by accident, I found Rick Beato doing a video called “Is This Boston’s Greatest Song” I HAD to click. Not just because I had to know is he chose Foreplay/Longtime, but because if he did, I HAD to hear him isolate tracks. I am a fan of Rick’s videos because he really knows what he’s talking about, and he knows how to explain music to those of us who don’t really know the language of music like the pros do. So as you might have guessed, he did choose Foreplay/Longtime, he did isolate tracks-that will blow your mind…and earballs-and it’s worth the watch, even when he goes off topic and talks about Boston’s second album. As many times as I have heard the song, when he isolates some of the tracks I heard things I had never heard before. Oh and a tip…listen through your best headphones. And always remember to protect your hearing…..I speak from experience!

Happy Birthday To The Late Great Keith Emerson

My dad always listened to classical music in the car. KING-FM in Seattle to be specific. I was never very happy about that, but, as Dad said “The driver picks the station!” So I was exposed to quite a bit of classical music. So the first time I heard Hoedown from ELP, I thought “hmmm, that sounds familiar? Where have I heard that?” Wasn’t till much later I realized it was their take on the Aaron Copeland tune from Rodeo. Watching the video below, it still amazes me how fast Keith Emerson could play. I mean, you don’t NEED to play it that fast! But he could. So he did.

PS, love the bottle

Well this was a nice way to start a Friday

Usually there is some sort of hint, an article on a classic rock website or something somewhere when an artist is going to release something new. One of the first things I saw when I got to work was a headline saying Stevie Nicks covered and released “For What It’s Worth” written by Stephen Stills and recorded by Buffalo Springfield. No, it does not disappoint. Just the perfect way to start the day.

I’m not a guitar geek….

When I was watching Wolfgang Van Halen play Hot For Teacher during the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert, my second thought was, wow, what is that guitar he’s using? I mentioned that to Forrest, and he sent me the link to the video below. It’s a long video, and I wasn’t sure I’d even watch it all, but I did. Even if you’re not a guitar geek, it’s worth the watch, so carve out 45 minutes or so and enjoy!

In this video I’ve seen many times,

The Who’s “It’s Hard” was released September 4th of 1982. Athena was the first single, Eminence Front the second. I’ve seen the video for Eminence Front many times, but when I watched it over the weekend, I noticed something interesting. Roger Daltrey is seen arriving in a Cadillac limo. Pete Townsend and John Entwistle arrive together in a Ford van. I’m not saying anything specific, just that I had never noticed that before, and thought it was weird that I would notice that now. And yes, it’s a great song I hadn’t heard in a while.

Boss Flashback

August 5th was the 30th anniversary of the death of Jeff Porcaro, probably best know as the drummer for Toto, but he left his mark on many songs we all know. He played on Steely Dan tunes, he played on Dire Straits tunes, Don Henley’s “Dirty Laundry”-nope, Don didn’t play the drums on that one! Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”, along with fellow Toto bandmates Steve Lukather and brother Steve. The one song he played on that I had forgotten about was Springsteen’s “Human Touch”. And if I’m being honest, when I saw the title of the song I went “Huh? What song IS that?” Once I heard it, I remembered it. And have since added it to my collection. I kinda feel sorry for the people that had to hear it loudly coming from my car the other day. Not really. And damn Jeff was a great drummer!

Scott

Side note….Randy Jackson, the American Idol judge, was the bass player.

Side Side note…Jeff also played the drums on Pink Floyd’s “Mother”. Didn’t know that one…

Don’t Know Why I Have Not Seen This Before

A Cover Of Fleetwood Mac’s Don’t Stop

I was looking at the Wikipedia page for this song, and I saw, or rather actually took the time to read, that someone by the name of Nina Nesbitt had done a cover of the song. Of course I was intrigued, wonder who this person was and did she do the song justice. Here is the answer to the first, below is the answer to the second. No, I won’t spoil it by answering. Pick Up The Pieces

Yes, you read that correctly. The Phil Collins Big Band, something I seem to vaguely remember, covered the Average White Band’s Pick Up The Pieces. And they do it well, turning the song into a 20 something minute jam session. I don’t remember how I stumbled upon the video, but really glad I did. So take 20 minutes out of your day and get funky.

Billy Joel and Joe Elliot

When I saw that Joe Elliot jumped on stage with Billy Joel July 9th at Comerica Park the night before the Stadium Tour was to perform, I thought it would be well worth watching cell phone video to see Billy sing Pour Some Sugar On Me with Joe. Now, I will admit I didn’t watch the whole video, after a few minutes I scrolled to see where Billy might start singing. Oh, I did see him providing background harmonies, but come one…Billy Joel singing “Do you take sugar, One lump or two?!” would have been spectacular. Unless he did and I missed it. Because I could have missed it! And props to Billy’s band…they nailed it!

New From Brian May and Graham Gouldman

If you don’t recognize the name Graham Gouldman, you may recognize the band he founded 10cc. “I’m Not In Love” is one of my favorites, even though part of it always freaks me out. He and Brian May teamed up for a song to celebrate the James Webb Space Telescope sending the first pictures back from space. A New Alan Parsons Album Is On The Way

“From The New World” is the name of the new album, and it’s set for release July 15th. Alan has recruited some great names to play and sing on the album, including but certainly not limited to Joe Bonamassa with guitar solos on two songs, David Pack from Ambrosia-a band Alan produced at one point-and Tommy Shaw from Styx, singing lead vocals on the song released yesterday, Uroboros. Interesting that Tommy only sings…there is no listing of him playing guitar on any part of the album. Hope a few more songs from the album are put out before July 15th…not sure I can wait that long for new Alan Parsons music!

I got the link to this video from The Boss because he knows I like Boston. And I have to admit I was hesitant to watch it, because let’s face it, this song has never been anything less than number 2 on my list of favorite songs. Usually it’s Number 1, but there are times some other song takes over for a few minutes. To say I was impressed by this version would be an understatement! Go on and give it a watch. Even if you’re not a Boston fan, this version will impress you!

Breakdown Live

I remember hearing a live version of Breakdown by Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers on the radio in Seattle where the audience starts singing at the beginning of the song, and Tom let’s them, then says…”you’re gonna put me out of a job…..”, and I always loved that version. I have been looking online for it for some time now, and I have finally found it! Oh happy day! I thought it was from sometime in the late ’70’s early 80’s, but I could have found it sooner if I had only been paying attention. It’s from the live album Pack Up The Plantation: Live! from 1985. Oh well, now that I know that, I can own it! If you’ve never heard it, give it a listen……

This is amazing…

When I got a text from John Patrick from KTIK yesterday, I thought there was a problem. Not that there is always a problem when he texts on a Sunday, but the way the weekend had been going, it seemed likely. The only problem was the rabbit hole it took me down. He sent be a link to guitarist Gabriella Quevedo playing “Another Brick In The Wall”. After commenting back that I thought that was pretty cool, he texted back “Watch he do Comfortably Numb”. So I did. Um, wow. How had I not seen this before. Incredible. Amazing. Now I know what you’re thinking, and yes, the two David Gilmour solos are also incredible, and amazing. Oh, and all on an acoustic guitar. If you can, listen with headphones.

The Title Track From Presto

Music is subjective. You like what you like, and there is nothing wrong with that at all. I know people that think Rush is the best thing to happen to music ever, and some that just don’t get it. Me, I like a lot of Rush. And some songs I don’t care for. I have Rush’s Retrospective lll 1989 – 2008 in my phone (along with a LOT of other songs!), and yesterday on the way home Presto popped up. It’s not their most progressive, it doesn’t rock, but it is a really good song. I’d put the lyrics up as some of Neil Peart’s best, the mix of Alex’s acoustic and electric guitar, and Geddy’s harmonies……just wow. So give it a listen, Rush fan or not.

Now Comfortable Numb….

Elizabeth Zharoff is the Charismatic Voice. Last week I posted her hearing Rush’s Spirit Of Radio for the first time, and as expected, that led to a rabbit hole of her videos. So when I saw she did Comfortable Numb, I had to watch. Her analyzation of the song is fascinating. Usually I don’t want to spoil anything in the video, but I feel there are a few thigs to warn you about. First, she admits to knowing nothing about Pink Floyd. This is important to note as she doesn’t know who is who in the band, and does get some things wrong. She also admits she head Comfortably Numb before, in a car. In the video she watches the Pulse performance; not MY favorite live performance, but a Pink Floyd live performance. She really gets into the song, and really GETS the song and performance. Oh, one more warning….she does stop the video she’s watching right at the start of David Gilmour’s first solo, and during the second solo as well. it was jarring the second time, so I thought you should be ready for it. Oh, and if you’re like me, you’re going to want to listen to the song without commentary right after you watch.

Bryan Adams Cuts Like A Knife album is one of my favorites. And the title track is one of my favorite songs. I saw that Bryan had released a new single, and really wasn’t expecting to like it much as I’m not a big fan of his more recent stuff. I was wrong. “Never Gonna Rain” is part of Bryan’s upcoming So Happy It Hurts album due out on March 11th. I woke up with this song in my head…

I’ve said it before…I almost always wake up with a song in my head. This morning was no different, but the song…..not my first choice. And I have coworkers to blame. Yesterday afternoon, I was stopped by the coworker (not using names to protect the innocent) that has the office across from mine. Two other coworkers were in there, and through a boring conversation that I will spare you from, it turns out one of them was dressed like one of the Pink Ladies and one like Olivia Newton John, from Grease. No, they did not coordinate, and no, I didn’t immediately recognize that fact. I quickly found myself wandering back into my office and forgot about the whole thing. Until this morning. When I woke up with this song in my head. I blame them. And have told them so. They laughed. Watch it yourself if you dare.

I have been a Beach Boys fan as long as I can remember. I have had Beach Boys 8-Tracks, cassettes, vinyl, and of course mp3’s. I saw Brian live when he performed at the Morrison Center and it was amazing. The documentary Brian WIlson: Long Promised Road made it’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, and will be released to theaters and on VOD November 19th.
